ManpowerGroup Annual Survey Reveals U.S. Talent Shortage Worsening

Today, ManpowerGroup announced the results of the 11th annual Talent Shortage Survey and Hardest Jobs to Fill.

The 2016 Talent Shortage Survey reveals that 46% of U.S. employers are experiencing difficulty filling open positions within their organizations. This represents a 14% increase in employers struggling to fill job vacancies over 2015 and is higher than our global total, which increased 2% to 40%.

For the seventh consecutive year, Skilled Trades are the number 1 hardest jobs to fill in the United States. This is followed by 2) Drivers, 3) Sales Representatives, 4) Teachers, 5) Restaurant & Hotel Staff, 6) Accounting & Finance Staff, 7) Nurses, 8) Laborers, 9) Engineers, and 10) Technicians.

Why are employers having a hard time filling positions? Here’s what they reported:

  • 23% said lack of available applicants/no applicants;
  • 18% said lack of experience;
  • 16% said lack of hard skills (technical competencies);
  • 16% said looking for more pay than is offered; and
  • 12% said lack of soft skills (workplace competencies).

How are employers addressing talent shortages? Employers are pursuing a variety of strategies to overcome difficulties. Here’s what they stated:

  • 48% are offering training and development;
  • 44% are recruiting outside the talent pool;
  • 27% are exploring alternative sourcing strategies;
  • 22% are paying higher salary packages to recruits;
  • 19% are providing additional perks/benefits to recruits;
  • 17% are changing existing work models; and
  • 12% are outsourcing the work.
